What should be noted when cutting titanium materials?

Date:2025-08-06 16:51:35       Number of views:

When cutting titanium materials, the following characteristics of titanium should be noted:

(1) The friction coefficient of titanium is high, and chips are prone to high temperatures during cutting, which accelerates tool wear;

(2) Titanium has low thermal conductivity, and the chips are tough and not curled. The heat generated by friction with the cutting edge is almost entirely concentrated on the cutting edge and the rake surface of the tool, causing the cutting edge to burn. Therefore, the feed rate should not be too small, and the cutting speed should not be too high, otherwise it is easy to stick to the tool and burn fine titanium chips, causing accidents;

(3) Due to the low elastic modulus of titanium, it is prone to deflection during deep cutting of fine workpieces, causing the workpiece to easily detach from the tool. Therefore, an anti vibration frame needs to be installed during machining;

(4) Titanium has high temperature activity and is prone to surface contamination of workpieces during processing;

(5) Due to the high hardness of oxides, nitrides, and carbides in titanium, it is easy to cause rapid wear of the cutting edge of the tool during cutting;

(6) When cutting titanium, the cutting force is relatively small, and the cutting process is less likely to produce tool marks, so it can be processed with high surface smoothness.
