The Application of Titanium in Architecture

The development of traditional metal building materials, especially roof materials, followed the order of copper, surface treated steel plates, aluminum, stainless steel, and color steel plates. With the advancement of the times, people's requirements for urban buildings, especially for their aesthetics, are becoming increasingly high; With the development of the construction industry, architects have been pursuing the use of more advanced building materials than traditional ones in recent years. As an emerging building material, titanium and titanium alloys mainly have the following advantages.

(1) Can meet the requirements of lightweight building materials

Titanium has a low density, about 60% of steel and 50% of copper, but it has almost the same strength as ordinary steel. As a building, it can reduce weight by 70% to 75%, make it easy to lift, and move the center of gravity down, improving the overall seismic resistance of the building.

(2) Good processability and welding performance

Titanium and its alloys have good cold and hot working performance, and can be connected between components using universal welding processes. Additionally, the self restoring oxide film on the surface of titanium can prevent welding damage. In addition, according to customer needs, various secondary processing technologies and methods can be used to process the surface of titanium materials, such as etching, embossing, spinning, sandblasting, shot peening, electroplating, and drilling.

(3) Good corrosion resistance

Titanium quickly forms a strong oxide film in situ on its surface in the air, without the need for a coating of anti-corrosion film, making it excellent in oxidizing acid, alkali, salt media, especially in wet chlorine gas and seawater. It can resist urban pollution, industrial radiation, and extreme erosion, making it very suitable for roofs and walls of buildings.

(4) Low coefficient of thermal expansion

Compared with other metal building materials, titanium has a smaller thermal expansion coefficient, about 50% of stainless steel and 30% of aluminum. It is close to glass, bricks, cement, and stone, making it suitable for sharing. Titanium has a very low thermal stress, which is 1/2 of stainless steel and 1/3 of aluminum. It can be used as a whole material without the need for seams to compensate for thermal expansion and contraction.

(5) No environmental pollution

Due to its good corrosion resistance, titanium and titanium alloy materials can be 100% recycled without polluting the environment, making it a green and environmentally friendly material.
